Following the successful IEEE 5G Roadmap Workshop at ICC, the IEEE 5G and Beyond Initiative will be holding a Testbed Workshop focusing on experimental testbeds on 5G and Beyond. This workshop will take place, as part of the 2017 VTC, on Sunday September, 24th 2017 in Toronto. The objective of this workshop is to bring together developers, practitioners, technical experts and researchers to share experiences and advance the state of the art in all aspects of 5G systems prototyping, evaluation and testing. The workshop also aims to solicit contributions and promote discussion on the novel methodological studies and experimental paradigms for future 5G testbeds and co-development and co-deployment of experimental platforms. Of particular interest are ideas on extending publicly available testbeds with 5G related technologies as they become available and how they can be used to address common technological and scientific problems that are related to advanced wireless systems.
The workshop will cover a spectrum of distinguished speakers from all over the world who will share their experiences about building testbed and experimental results. They will also highlight how these testbeds can be used by IEEE 5G Community.

Konstantinos Alexandris received his Diploma and M.Sc. degrees in Electronic and Computer Engineering with distinction from the Technical University of Crete, Greece, in 2012 and 2014, respectively. He worked at the Telecommunications Circuit Laboratory (TCL) of École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL), Switzerland, as a Research Assistant. He is currently a PhD candidate in the Communication Systems Department at EURECOM, France. His research interests lie in the areas of software-defined networking, wireless cellular networks, wireless communications and software-defined radio testbeds. In parallel with his research, he is currently working on Eurecom's experimental software radio platform, OpenAirInterface (OAI). He has received fellowship awards for his undergraduate studies and he was the recipient of the 2012-2013 best Diploma Thesis Award on Advanced Wireless Systems, presented by the IEEE Vehicular Technology Society (VTS) and Aerospace & Electronic Systems Society (AESS) joint Greece Chapter. At the end of 2015, he was awarded as exemplary reviewer for the IEEE Wireless Communications Letters.

Mischa Dohler is full Professor in Wireless Communications at King's College London, driving cross-disciplinary research and innovation in technology, sciences and arts. He is the Director of the Centre for Telecommunications Research, co-founder of the pioneering smart city company Worldsensing, Fellow of the IEEE, the Royal Academy of Engineering and the Royal Society of Arts (RSA), and a Distinguished Member of Harvard Square Leaders Excellence.
He is a frequent keynote, panel and tutorial speaker, and has received numerous awards. He has pioneered several research fields, contributed to numerous wireless broadband, IoT/M2M and cyber security standards, holds a dozen patents, organized and chaired numerous conferences, was the Editor-in-Chief of two journals, has more than 200 highly-cited publications, and authored several books.
He acts as policy, technology and entrepreneurship adviser, examples being Richard Branson's Carbon War Room, former Minister David Willetts' 8 Great Technology Fund, UK Regulator Ofcom, UK Ministries, No 10, EPSRC ICT Strategy Advisory Team, European Commission, Tech London Advocate, ISO Smart City working group, and various start-ups.
He is also an entrepreneur; composer & pianist with 5 albums on iTunes and an artist-verified Spotify account; as well as fluent in 6 languages. He has talked twice at TEDx. He had coverage by national and international TV & radio, and his contributions have featured on the BBC, the Wall Street Journal and many others.

Ashutosh Dutta is currently Lead Member of Technical Staff at AT&T's Chief Security Office in Middletown, New Jersey. His career, spanning more than 30 years, includes Director of Technology Security at AT&T, CTO of Wireless at a Cybersecurity company NIKSUN, Inc., Senior Scientist in Telcordia Research, Director of Central Research Facility at Columbia University, adjunct faculty at NJIT, and Computer Engineer with TATA Motors. He has more than 90 conference and journal publications, three book chapters, and 30 issued patents. Ashutosh is co-author of the book, titled, "Mobility Protocols and Handover Optimization: Design, Evaluation and Application," published by IEEE and John & Wiley that was recently translated into Chinese language. An active IEEE and ACM volunteer, Ashutosh served as the chair for IEEE Princeton / Central Jersey Section, Industry Relation Chair for Region 1 and MGA, Pre-University Coordinator for IEEE MGA and vice chair of Education Society Chapter of PCJS. He co-founded the IEEE STEM conference (ISEC) and helped to implement EPICS (Engineering Projects in Community Service) projects in several high schools. Ashutosh currently serves as the Director of Industry Outreach for IEEE Communications Society and was the founding co-chair for IEEE 5G initiative. He was recipient of the prestigious 2009 IEEE MGA Leadership award and 2010 IEEE-USA professional leadership award. Ashutosh serves as IEEE Communications Society's Distinguished Lecturer for 2017-2018. Ashutosh obtained his BS in Electrical Engineering from NIT Rourkela, India, MS in Computer Science from NJIT, and Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from Columbia University under the supervision of Prof. Henning Schulzrinne. Ashutosh is a senior member of IEEE and ACM.
Xavier Fernando is a Professor and Director of Ryerson Communications Lab. He was an IEEE Distinguished Lecturer and delivered over 40 invited lectures worldwide. He has (co-)authored over 150 research articles and holds three patents (one pending). He has monographed a widely selling book on Radio over Fiber systems, which is translated in Mandarin. He is also a co-author of IEEE COMSOC WEBOK. He was a member in the IEEE COMSOC Education Board Working Group on Wireless Communications, 2010-2012. He was the General Chair for IEEE Canadian Conference on Electrical and Computer Engineering (CCECE) 2014.
He and his students have won several awards and prizes including; the First prize at the Humanitarian Initiatives Workshop of CCECE 2014; Second Prize at the 2014 IHTC Conference in Montreal; Best Paper Award at the International Conference of Smart Grid Engineering (SEGE 2014), UOIT, Canada, 2014; IEEE Microwave Theory and Techniques Society Prize in 2010, Sarnoff Symposium prize in 2009, Opto-Canada best poster prize in 2003 and CCECE best paper prize in 2001.
Xavier Fernando earned his PhD from the University of Calgary, Alberta in 2001 in affiliation with TRLabs. His PhD work won the best Canadian paper award and a US patent. He joined Ryerson University in 2001, received early tenure and established Ryerson Communications Lab.
Ilie-Daniel Gheorghe-Pop is a computer science engineer with experience in multiple IT domains, currently focused on research and development in the telecommunication sector. Performing scientist with in-depth expertise on benchmarking and evaluation of evolved packet core networks. Team leader with a keen dedication to meeting requirements on LTE testbed deployments and system integration. Project manager on public as well as industry research projects.

Amitabha (Amitava) Ghosh is a Nokia Fellow and Head, Small Cell Research at Nokia Bell Labs. He joined Motorola in 1990 after receiving his Ph.D in Electrical Engineering from Southern Methodist University, Dallas. Since joining Motorola he worked on multiple wireless technologies starting from IS-95, cdma-2000, 1xEV-DV/1XTREME, 1xEV-DO, UMTS, HSPA, 802.16e/WiMAX and 3GPP LTE. Dr. Ghosh has 60 issued patents, has written multiple book chapters and has authored numerous external and internal technical papers. He is currently working on 3GPP LTE-Advanced and 5G technologies. His research interests are in the area of digital communications, signal processing and wireless communications. He is a Fellow of IEEE, recipient of 2016 IEEE Stephen O. Rice and 2017 Neal Shephard prize and co-author of the book titled "Essentials of LTE and LTE-A".

Abhimanyu Gosain is the Technical Program Director for the Platforms for Advanced Wireless Research Initiative at Northeastern University. He was formerly the lead wireless engineer for the NSF GENI Testbed at Raytheon BBN Technologies. His numerous professional publications and experience exemplify use-inspired basic research in the field of networking technologies such as LTE, dispersed computing and MANET sensor networking. He is an IEEE Senior Member. He received his M.S. degree from Tufts University and M.B.A. from Boston University with High Honors.

John Kaewell has over 30 years of wireless technology development, engineering management and team building experience. Led the development of integrated circuits and software for multiple generations of wireless products. Skilled system architect and problem solver with expertise in communications, computer networking, IC design, virtualization and software development. Played key role in multiple business development activities worldwide.
John graduated from Drexel University with a BS and MS degree in Electrical Engineering and completed the University of Pennsylvania Wharton School Executive Development Program.
Abhay Karandikar is currently Dean (Faculty Affairs) and Institute Chair Professor in the department of electrical engineering at Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay. He was the Head of the Department from January 2012 to January 2015. He is also the coordinator of Tata Teleservices IIT Bombay Center for Excellence in Telecom (TICET) and National Center of Excellence in Technology for Internal Security. He spearheaded a national effort in setting up Telecom Standards Development Society of India (TSDSI), India's standards body for telecom with participation of all stakeholders. Prof Karandikar is the founding member and Chairman of TSDSI. Prof Karandikar has also contributed to important policy initiatives at national level including Five Year Plan, TV White Space, Electronics System Design and Manufacturing. He has advised several industries and is on the advisory board/board of directors of some. He has several patents issued and pending, contributions to IEEE, 3GPP standards, contributed chapters in books and large number of papers in international journals and conferences to his credit. Dr. Karandikar was awarded with IEEE SA's Standards Medallion in December 2016 in New Jersey. His team also won Mozilla Open Innovation challenge prize for Gram Solution for rural broadband in March 2017. He is a two time recipient of award for excellence in teaching at IIT Bombay- in 2006 and 2011. He is co-author of papers which won the Best paper awards in ACM MobiHoc 2009, Workshop on Indoor and Outdoor Small Cells WiOpt2014 and finalist for the best paper award in IEEE LCN 2012 and IEEE NCC 2014 conferences.

Dr. Ivo Maljevic is a senior member of TELUS' technology strategy team, where he focuses on defining a long-term vision for the RAN evolution, radio performance characterization and modeling, radio spectrum and standardization. In terms of broader industry involvement, in the past he has participated in the Canadian Evaluation Group for the IMT-Advanced proposal, and was also actively involved in NGMN's and ATIS 5G initiatives. He also participates in 3GPP RAN sessions. Additionally, Ivo is an adjunct professor at the University of Toronto. Prior to TELUS, he was with Soma Networks, and before that, he worked at Motorola Canada.
Dr. Maljevic received the B.S. degree from the University of Podgorica in 1991, the M.S. degree from the University of Belgrade in 1995, and the Ph.D. degree from the University of Toronto, Canada, in 2004, all in electrical engineering. His areas of expertise include NR/LTE/WiMAX/CDMA wireless systems, software defined radio, signal processing, and digital communications theory.

Sofie Pollin obtained her PhD degree at KU Leuven with honors in 2006. From 2006-2008 she continued her research on wireless communication, energy-efficient networks, cross-layer design, coexistence and cognitive radio at UC Berkeley. In November 2008 she returned to imec to become a principal scientist in the green radio team. Since 2012, she is tenure track assistant professor at the electrical engineering department at KU Leuven. Her research centers around Networked Systems that require networks that are ever more dense, heterogeneous, battery powered and spectrum constrained. Prof. Pollin is BAEF and Marie Curie fellow, and IEEE senior member.
Talk title: "5G Creativity: Flexible Radios in Flexible Networking Configurations"
Prof. Ari Pouttu was born in Kokkola, Finland in 1966. He has scientific and engineering experience as a researcher, project manager and research manager in fields such as synchronization, interference suppression, coding, and modulation designs in spread spectrum and multicarrier systems. The projects under his command have resulted waveforms and system designs for military radio communication, radar systems, embedded device networks, future wireless radio communications including cellular systems, cognitive networks and navigation applications. He has also been involved with architecture design for Finnish Software Radio including adaptive antennas and related algorithms.
He has published more than 50 conference or journal papers in the field of wireless communications and he holds two patents. He was the Director of Centre for Wireless Communications in the University of Oulu from 2006 to 2012. Currently he is heading as a professor a research group targeting dependable wireless solutions including solutions for 5G.

Ashok Sunder Rajan is a Sr. Research Scientist at Intel Labs leading research on operational scalability and performance efficiency of telecom network infrastructure. Ashok has had a major influence in driving NFV, IoT and Intel's presence at ETSI, OMA, ATIS, 3GPP. Ashok career kick-started with a successful startup in Industrial Robotics and Automation. Before Intel Ashok lead technology service strategy for Gemalto, working with Tier 1 operators in North America. Ashok holds a MS in Wireless Communications and an MBA.

Christian Esteve Rothenberg is an Assistant Professor in the Faculty of Electrical & Computer Engineering (FEEC) at University of Campinas (UNICAMP), Brazil, where he received his Ph.D. (2010) and currently leads the Information & Networking Technologies Research & Innovation Group (INTRIG). His research activities span all layers of distributed systems and network architectures and are often carried in collaboration with academia and industry (e.g., Ericsson, Samsung, CPqD) around the world, leading to multiple open source networking projects (e.g., RouteFlow, libfluid, ofsoftswitch13, Mininet-WiFi) in the areas of SDN and NFV among other scientific results. Christian has two international patents and over 70 publications in scientific journals and top-tier networking conferences including SIGCOMM and INFOCOM.
Christian worked as Senior Research Scientist in the areas of IP systems and networking at CPqD R&D Center (2010-2013), and holds the Telecommunication Engineering degree from the Technical University of Madrid (ETSIT - UPM), Spain, and the M.Sc. (Dipl. Ing.) degree in Electrical Engineering and Information Technology from the Darmstadt University of Technology (TUD), Germany, 2006.

Ivan Seskar is Associate Director at WINLAB, Rutgers University responsible for experimental systems and prototyping projects. He is currently PI for NSF GENI Wireless project which resulted in campus deployments of LTE/WiMAX base stations at several US universities, and for the NSF CloudLab deployment at Rutgers. He has also been co-PI and project manager for all three phases of the NSF-supported ORBIT mid-scale testbed project at WINLAB, successfully leading technology development and operations since the testbed was released as a community resource in 2005 and for which the team received the 2008 NSF Alexander Schwarzkopf Prize for Technological Innovation. Ivan is a co-chair of the IEEE 5G Tested Working Group, Senior Member of the IEEE, member of ACM and co-founder and CTO of Upside Wireless Inc.
Christoph Thuemmler, M.D, PhD is a Physician specialised in General Internal Medicine and Geriatric Medicine and a Professor of eHealth at Edinburgh Napier University in Edinburgh, UK. He has a special interest in virtualisation of care and as such in mobile networks, especially in 5G. Christoph has been working with large industry and the European Commission in various advisory roles. He has contributed to the design of the 5G Action Plan and has been leading the 5G Health vertical of the European 5G PPP. As contributor to the IEEE 5G Roadmap he is working towards early domain specific 5G testbed implementations in the health domain. Christoph is the co-editor of a recent Springer editorial on "Health 4.0" referring to the process of the 4th industrial revolution in the health domain.

Tracy Van Brakle is a Principal Member of Technical Staff with AT&T who is an active participant and key contributor within several open source projects. Her current area of interest is integrating the basic building blocks of Software Defined Wireless Networks with infrastructure platforms, i.e., ONF’s M-CORD, and automation platforms such as ONAP. This involves conducting a series of 5G end-to-end network slicing PoCs in collaboration with wireless equipment vendors and representatives from other major operators, e.g., Bell Canada, China Mobile, Deutsche Telekom, and Telefónica.
Sarah Yost is a product marketing manager on the software defined radio (SDR) team at NI. She manages NI’s mmWave hardware products. In addition to product management, Sarah works with NI’s advanced wireless research team promoting and studying 5G. She has a deep knowledge of USRPs from her time spent on the Ettus Research R&D team. Sarah’s background is in microwave and millimeter wave technology, specifically for wireless communications.
Sarah has a BS in electrical engineering from Texas Tech University.

Wuxiong Zhang (Ph.D.) is an associate professor at Shanghai Institute of Microsystem and Information Technology (SIMIT), Chinese Academy of Sciences. He received the Ph. D. degree from the University of Chinese Academy of Sciences in 2013, and he was with a short-term academic exchange to Heriot-watt University in 2011. He has presided / participated in tens of important research project, including projects funded by the national natural science foundation of China, the national science and technology major projects, projects funded by the Shanghai Municipal Science and Technology Commission. His research interest lies in 5G mobile communication technologies, vehicular networks and heterogeneous networks. He was awarded by China Communications Society in 2015 for his contribution in Energy Efficient Communication and Networking (rank No. 5).
Talk title: "Parallel Channel Sounder for MIMO Communications"
Eileen Healy is the CEO of Healy & Co, a leading-edge engineering services company. Working with U.S. telecom network operators, her company supports the implementation of capacity delivery, network migration and business planning services. She is also Co-Chair of IEEE Software Defined Networks (SDN), a worldwide initiative addressing the main Softwarization aspects of SDN, NFV and 5G. Previously, she founded and sold TeleCompetition Inc., a market research and data analytics company that passed data specific strategic insights into market adoption of a host of mobile services products. With a career focused on the network operator perspective, Eileen has held senior positions with both broadband and mobility service providers including Pacific Bell Mobile Services and AT&T. In addition, she has worked extensively with a number of different governmental organizations, such as the ITU, EU, ETSI and LA-RICS on policy, public safety and spectrum allocations. Eileen has honed a collaborative leadership style while facilitating key group contributions to strategic technology development. She holds a B.S. degree in Electrical Engineering from University of California at Berkeley.
Prof. Dr. Thomas Magedanz acts as Director of the "Software-based Networks (NGNI)“ Business Unit at the Fraunhofer Institute FOKUS in Berlin, Germany, and is responsible for the 5G Berlin and Industrial IOT Testbeds. In addition, he is full university professor with his own department for Next Generation Networks (called Architekturen der Vermittlungsknoten – AV – in German) at the Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences Faculty (IV) of the Technical University (TU) Berlin, Germany educating Master and PhD students. For more than 28 years Prof. Magedanz is performing applied research and development in the field of converging fixed and mobile telecommunications, the Internet and information and communication technologies for major operators and vendors around the globe. In this context he has created various famous software toolkits and open technology and application testbeds in the context of 4G, Smart Cities, M2M/OT, SDN/NFV, and since 2015 also 5G and Edge Computing. He also acts as strategic advisor for several tier one operators and major international equipment manufacturers. Last but not least he is visiting professor at several leading universities around the globe.
Chrysa Papagianni received her Diploma and Ph.D. in Electrical and Computer Engineering, both from the National Technical University of Athens (NTUA), Greece, in 2003 and 2009 respectively. From 2008 to 2013 she was a teaching fellow at the MSc in Networking and Data Communications delivered by the departments of Electronics Engineering and Automation Engineering at the Piraeus University of Applied Sciences, Greece, in collaboration with Kingston University, London, U.K. From 2014 to 2016, she was a Research and Teaching Associate with the School of Electrical and Computer Engineering at NTUA. She has participated in various EU RTD projects, many within the Future Internet Research and Experimentation Initiative. Since 2016 she is an Assistant Research Scientist at the Institute for Systems Research with a joint appointment in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Maryland. Dr Papagianni’s research interests lie primarily in the area of computer networks and distributed systems with emphasis on virtualisation, network optimisation, management and service provisioning, software defined networking.
Harold Tepper is a Senior Program Director with the IEEE Future Directions organization. In this capacity, he drives a major IEEE-wide Initiative on 5G. Previously he managed the Internet of Things, Smart Cities, Humanitarian Technology Challenge and Smart Grid Initiatives from incubation to launch. Before moving to the IEEE, he was employed by and consulted to telecommunication industry leaders including AT&T, Cisco, Siemens, Verizon, Avaya, Lucent, NTT, Ericsson, Fujitsu, Nortel and Toshiba. Mr. Tepper holds a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering, a Master of Business Administration and is a certified Project Management Professional (PMP).
